Writers Recommend: Ian Winwood

You will find in my online store (and on displays in my physical store) curations by writers for readers, a list of books from the genre they write in – or feel passionately about for other reasons – that they desperately wish to press into readers’ hands.

These are the books that they guard on their bedside table, the books they buy again and again for their friends, the books that they recommend for entry level into a particular genre, or incredible finds for those who are already well-read in that area. I am sure within every curation you will learn something new, but even better than that, those same writers met with me to tell you just why they love the books that they’ve picked.

In this video you will hear from Ian Winwood with his pick of some of his favourite music biographies and essay collections. Ian is a music journalist and author, and in 2022 Faber published his book Bodies – Life and Death in Music, a book detailing the rock and roll excesses and how Ian succumbed to them himself. This is what the Guardian had to say about Bodies: It should be a harrowing read, and it frequently is: that it doesn’t make you despair entirely is down to Winwood’s skill as a prose stylist. He makes a compelling argument and overturns some long-held notions about ‘rock and roll excess’ by deftly tying together a vast amount of information… and liberally lacing it with dark, self-deprecating humour.’

Included in Ian Winwood’s curation are:

Bodies by Ian Winwood

Lonely Boy by Steve Jones

The Dark Stuff by Nick Kent

Clothes, Music, Boys by Viv Albertine

Everybody Loves Our Town by Mark Yarm
